MESILLA PARK MAN SURRENDERS TO DEPUTIES

               A Mesilla Park man wanted on charges that he beat his 28-year-old girlfriend turned himself in Friday at the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office in Las Cruces.

               Ernesto Vasquez, 30, is charged with one count of aggravated battery against a household member causing great bodily harm and one count of battery against a household member. Shortly after his surrender, he was transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

   Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators obtained a warrant Thursday for Vasquez, after his girlfriend was taken to a Las Cruces hospital on Feb. 1 with an injured eye that was red and swollen shut.  Hospital staff described the injury as an orbital fracture, which required plastic surgery.

               According to investigators, the victim said she had been with Vasquez on Feb. 1 and had been in an argument with him. The victim told investigators Vasquez hit her in the face during the course of that argument.              

               Vasquez remains at the detention center on a $25,000 secured bond.
