Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators say a drive-by shooting on the East Mesa left a family’s dog with a bullet lodged in its chest.

Deputies responded to a shots-fired call in the 9400 block of Sirius, on the corner of Moongate Road, just after midnight Monday. Once they arrived, Juan Figueroa reported hearing a vehicle with a loud muffler driving near his home just before hearing gun shots.

Figueroa said he went outside his home to see what the noise was about, and found his dog injured in his yard.
The family dog, a collie-mix named “Max” had been shot in the chest. The Figueroas took the dog to a vet, but were unable to afford treatment and took the dog home.

Figueroa said he and his family moved to the neighborhood three months ago.
