The work of renowned El Paso artist Tom Lea will be featured in a posthumous exhibit titled “Artwork and Airplanes: The Aviation Paintings of Tom Lea” at the War Eagles Air Museum at the Doña Ana County Airport in Santa Teresa on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The program, presented by Lieutenant Colonel Brendan Greeley, a retired U.S. Marine pilot and editor of The Two Thousand Yard Stare: Tom Lea’s World War II, will include the exhibit and discussion of several of Lea’s paintings, as well as a personalized tour of the War Eagles Museum to view some of the actual aircraft Lea depicted in his work.

Although not primarily known as an aviation artist, Lea often included vintage “war birds” in many of his World War II paintings. Aviation enthusiasts and art lovers alike have lauded Lea’s work for its detailed and accurate depiction of the planes.

Weather permitting, the show will also feature the sights, sounds and smells of a North American P-51D Mustang engine as it takes a pass along the runway outside the museum.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at the War Eagles Museum inside the Doña Ana County Airport, 8012 Airport Road in Santa Teresa.

Admission is free.
