Regional planners who assisted Doña Ana County with the One Valley, One Vision 2040 plan have been awarded the 2012 National American Planning Association’s Comprehensive Planning award.

Formal recognition for the plan will be given Tuesday during the 2012 NMAPA Annual Conference Awards Ceremony in Rio Rancho.

In a letter to Doña Ana County and City of Las Cruces planners, NMAPA said the One Valley, One Vision regional approach “brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to form a cohesive vision.”

One Valley, One Vision 2040 is the largest long-range planning effort ever attempted in Doña Ana County. It addresses the long-term growth needs of Anthony, Hatch, Las Cruces, Mesilla and Sunland Park with respect to several quality-of-life issues, including public transportation, use of open space, infrastructure, housing and historic preservation.

The NMAPA applauded the One Valley, One Vision effort for its outstanding achievements in the application of planning principles and techniques to solve problems and improve quality of life.

An extensive public outreach was conducted during development of the plan, which included phone and mail surveys and a Vision 2040 website, in addition to the public stakeholder meetings.
