COUNTY TEAMS WITH MADD TO SPUR PARENT/TEEN TALKS

The Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department is teaming with Mothers Against Drunk Drivers to make Thursday, April 21, the day that parents sit down with their teenage children to talk about the dangers of underage drinking.

Teams of specialists will be deployed from 9 a.m. to noon at both Wal-Marts in Las Cruces and from 2-5 p.m. at Sam’s Club to provide literature supporting the initiative.

Dubbed PowerTalk21, the program aims to become an annual event that builds in momentum to show parents how to communicate effectively with their children about underage drinking. A handbook, “Power of Parents: It’s Your Influence” has been developed to launch the 2011 version of PowerTalk21.

To obtain a copy of the handbook, call (575) 525-5854 or go to either Wal-Mart on Thursday.
