DOÑA ANA MOUNTAIN CLEAN-UP PLANNED FOR APRIL 30

Working in conjunction with the Cruces Crawlers four-wheel-drive club, Keep America Beautiful and Doña Ana County will provide equipment and supplies for a clean-up in the Doña Ana Mountains on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Volunteers are needed.

Ben Hutchison and Sean Privette, the event organizers, approached Doña Ana County about providing roll-off containers, gloves, bags and other supplies for the day-long event. Joe Padilla of the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department oversees the county’s Keep America Beautiful grant and was able to offer the county’s assistance.

“The Doña Ana Mountains have been neglected and are in need of help and attention,” Privette said. “We do not understand how or why the residents of Las Cruces and the surrounding areas have dumped their trash and debris in the Doña Ana Mountains, but they have. It’s time to clean it up.”

Privette said free lunches and cold drinks will be provided to all volunteers who sign up in advance to participate in the clean-up initiative.

Volunteers are asked to convene at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30, on County Road D-054, near the Doña Ana community solid-waste convenience station. To reach the clean-up site, take I-25 to the Doña Ana exit, go east to County Road D-054 and proceed. Signs will point the way to the gathering area.
