Doña Ana County is seeking minor-party applicants to serve on a Redistricting Advisory Committee to work with the county’s consultant to develop redistricting proposals for consideration by the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee will be comprised of two registered Democrats, two registered Republicans, and one representative of a minor party.

Applications already have been received from both Republicans and Democrats, but no applications were received from registered minor-party residents. As a result, the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners has extended the application deadline for registered minor-party candidates to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011. At least three such applications must be received or the committee will not have minor-party representation.

Applicants must be willing to commit to three, all-day public meetings and other meetings as needed to complete the project.

Redistricting is the process of redrawing commission boundaries after a decennial U.S. Census in an effort to provide for equal commission representation.

Interested individuals must deliver a detailed letter of interest that specifies the individual’s political party affiliation to Jess Williams in the Doña Ana County Commission Liaison Office, 845 N. Motel Blvd., Las Cruces, N.M., 88007.

All applicants are invited to attend the March 22 meeting of the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners to give a two-minute presentation on their reasons for applying and any relevant experience they may have that should be taken into consideration.

Williams will consult with the Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections to confirm party affiliation of all applicants.
