CLERK ELLINS SCHEDULES CEREMONY TO HONOR STUDENT POLL WORKERS

Doña Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins has scheduled a 10 a.m. ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 22, to recognize student poll workers who assisted with the Nov. 2 General Elections.

Ellins said he and his staff were so impressed by the student workers’ performance that he wanted to recognize them in a public forum with their families and friends in attendance.

During the ceremony, Ellins said he will publicly recognize each student and present a personalized certificate of appreciation for their contributions to the smooth elections process.

Never before have student poll-workers been allowed at the election sites, but the 2009 New Mexico Legislature modified the law, and Nov. 2 was the Bureau of Elections’ first opportunity to employ the students and evaluate their commitment to the posts.

“These students surpassed everyone’s expectations,” Ellins said. “We have definite plans to widen this base of poll employees going forward.”

The ceremony will be held in the Commission Chambers of the Doña Ana County Government Center at 845 N. Motel Blvd., in Las Cruces.
