PET ADOPTION EVENTS SLATED SATURDAY NOV. 13; OTHER EVENTS ON TAP

The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley will conduct pet adoption events Saturday, Nov. 13. Available for adoption will be dogs, puppies, cats and kittens.
Adoptions will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Las Cruces.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, adoptions also will be facilitated at PetCo, 3050 E. Lohman, in Las Cruces.

Adoption fees are $75 for dogs/ puppies and $50 for cats/kittens. The fee includes the first set of vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchip.

At the PetCo event, microchipping for pets that already have homes will be available to the public for $20, and city pet licenses will be available to neutered pets for $5 each. Licenses for unneutered pets are $25 each. Proof of spay/neuter is required before a $5 license will be issued. Pet owners also must bring current proof of rabies vaccination for each animal to be licensed.

Other upcoming companion-animal-related events include the following:

* PetCo Foundation’s National Pet Food Bank Donation Drive is underway through Nov. 14. This national effort is being sponsored by Hill's Science Diet, who will match all national donations. It also is being supported by Best Friends Animal Society. The local PetCo store will participate and already donates its food-bin donations to Action Plan for Animals (APA)'s pet food bank as the local partner of PetCo Foundation's support of companion-animal food banks across the nation.

* A Sunday Brunch/Pet Food Drive at De La Vega's Pecan Grill will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant will offer 15 percent off their Sunday brunch in exchange for a donation of a bag of dog or cat food (or money) toward APA's pet food bank; De la Vega's is located on the corner of Telshor and Lohman.

* The Humane Society of Southern New Mexico will coordinate adoptions as part of the PetSmart Charities Holiday National Adoption Weekend, Nov 13-14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. HSSNM will feature many rescue animals available for adoption. Animals featured will include dogs in the organization’s foster-care program and felines currently showcased at the PetSmart Charities Adoption Center, as well as cats and kittens in the HSSNM foster-care program.

* Benefit at the Black Box Theatre, a No Strings Theatre Company, will be held Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m. A romantic comedy titled ‘Cockeyed,’ a play directed by Ceil Herman, will be the feature matinee. Tickets are $15, available in advance through HSSNM members (575-522-2529 or 575-541-8106) or at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales support HSSNM programs serving homeless/rescued animals, the pet help line, and work in humane education. * Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) has moved to its new location and will host an open house Saturday, Nov. 13 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The new location is at 2405 W. Picacho Ave., next to the Palms Business Complex and across from the Peddler's Pavilion

* A Critter Christmas Celebration, benefitting SNAP, DACHS, and For the Sake of Animals (friends of the animal shelter), will be held Saturday Dec. 11 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the historic Amador Hotel.

* The new Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary thrift store location is now open at 840 El Paseo Rd., right across the street from Sutherland’s and between Family Dollar and Business Products Center. Proceeds from sales benefit Doña Ana County’s only no-kill shelter facility.
