OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLANS JUNE 29 DISASTER EXERCISE

OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PLANS JUNE 29 DISASTER EXERCISE

The Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management will conduct a large-scale tabletop exercise on Monday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Doña Ana County Government Center at 845 N. Motel Blvd., in Las Cruces.

The scenario for this county-wide tabletop exercise centers around a powerful second wave of the H1N1 flu virus.
The tabletop exercise will evaluate the effectiveness of the current pandemic-response plan, including:

o The collective capability of local responders, healthcare organizations, and resource management agencies to respond to a major medical surge event requiring mass treatment of the local population;
o Implementation of each element of the New Mexico Modular Emergency Medical System to support a medical surge response; and

o Effectiveness of the Incident Command / Unified Command structure and coordinated integration of medical command and control from the local medical professional community

The objective behind the exercise is to raise the community’s level of interest in planning and preparedness. If the virus returns with a vengeance in the fall, it could have a significant impact on continuity of operations for both public safety providers and county operations.

The results are intended to strengthen the community’s Emergency Operations Plan, improve emergency medical surge capability and enhance community and hospital preparedness for public health emergencies.

For more information on the upcoming exercise, contact the Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management at (575) 647-7901. Local media are encouraged to participate and cover the entire event.
