TREASURER CHANGES PROPERTY-TAX MAILING SYSTEM TO AVOID CONFUSION

Doña Ana County Treasurer David Gutierrez has announced the elimination of simultaneous property-tax notifications mailed to property owners and mortgage companies.

“That program worked well in theory, but failed the reality test,” Gutierrez said. “We have hundreds of instances on file where property owners received their courtesy notifications and then came in to pay property taxes that should have been paid from the escrow funds held by the mortgage companies. In every case, both the property owner and the mortgage company faced weeks of extraneous negotiating to work out the problem.”

Gutierrez said he will only mail property-tax notices to the party actually responsible for paying the taxes. In the case of a lien-free property, the notification will be mailed directly to the property owner, but in cases where a mortgage company is managing a property owner’s escrow account, the notification will be mailed to the mortgage company.

Property-tax notices are scheduled to be mailed out in April.
