FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE HAY FIRE AT VADO DAIRY

Firefighters from four departments are on the scene at a major hay fire in Vado, where damages are already estimated at $37,000.

Capt. Kellen Tarkington of the Doña Ana County Fire and Emergency Service Department said 20 firefighters are on the scene at Big Sky Dairy, where two large hay stacks are ablaze. He said the priority at this time is to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby third stockpile of hay. The hay is stored under a series of interconnected metal sheds.

“The call came in at 3:20 a.m., and we expect to be here throughout the day,” he said, adding that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Departments on the scene are South Valley Volunteer Fire Department, La Mesa, Volunteer Fire Department, Santa Teresa Volunteer Fire Department and the West Valley Fire Department from El Paso County.
