DOÑA ANA COUNTY HOSTS FAMILY-FRIENDLY HEALTH EVENT ON SEPT. 13

There will be food, activities, music and more on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Doña Ana County Government Center in Las Cruces, when the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department stages a family-friendly indoor/outdoor event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free to the public. Participants who bring a new, unwrapped child’s toy for holiday distribution will get three chances to plunge a Doña Ana County elected official into an ice-cold dunking both. Commissioners and other elected officials have volunteered for the cause. Other games and events will be staged on the lawn. In addition, the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department will showcase new technology aimed at getting drunken drivers off the road, and some participants will be able to drive a specially modified vehicle that replicates the effects of impaired driving. Multiple agencies from many communities will be on hand with informational booths, give-aways and services designed to make Doña Ana County’s communities healthier across the board. As of Monday, Sept. 8, more than 40 agencies and organizations had confirmed their participation in the event, with still more finalizing space reservations. “This event will be a lot of fun for anyone who comes to share the activities,” said Silvia Sierra, director of the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department. “To my knowledge, nothing of this ambitious scope and magnitude has ever been staged in the Mesilla Valley with the unified effort of helping residents to make healthier choices in life.” Sierra said the event also offers an opportunity for people who may not have visited the Doña Ana County Government Center to meet their county officials, tour the building and view the student and professional artwork displayed inside. “We encourage everyone to come to this event,” she said. “There will be surprises throughout the day. This is truly an event something for anyone of any age to enjoy, and there will be just so much information available about health services in our region. We’re excited to stage this event, and we hope to see a big crowd show up to enjoy it and benefit from it.” The Doña Ana County Government Center is located at 845 N. Motel Blvd., in Las Cruces. ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** Reporters seeking more information or interviews may call county Public Information Director Jess Williams at (575) 525-5801.
