ELECTIONS SUPERVISOR ADVISES CAUTION WITH STREET-LEVEL REGISTRATIONS

The Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections has been receiving calls and complaints regarding misleading voter-registration activities in some Doña Ana County communities.

Elections Supervisor Lynn Ellins said the most disturbing complaint is from people who are being told they must re-register to vote under a new law passed by the Legislature.

“This is simply not true,” Ellins said. “Any voter who is registered and in good standing has no obligation to re-register. Our office is happy to answer any questions.”

Ellins said many groups are legally entitled to conduct voter-registration drives, but they are not supervised or trained by the Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections staff, and they may or may not be disseminating accurate information.

“We encourage people who are suspicious about anything they’re told to contact our office at (575) 647-7428,” Ellins said. “Ideally, people who wish to register would do so here at the Doña Ana County Government Center or at their respective political-party headquarters, where accurate information is available.”
