COUNTY PREPARES TO HOST 700+ REPRESENTATIVES FROM 33 COUNTIES

As the host county for the 2008 New Mexico Association of Counties (NMAC) Summer Conference, Doña Ana County is in the final stages of preparations for the four-day event, which begins next Tuesday, June 17, at 10 a.m. with early-bird registration at New Mexico State University’s Corbett Center.

According to conference coordinator Yolanda Archuleta of NMAC, more than 700 pre-registrations already have been received, and past experience indicates that an additional 50-70 people will register at the conference opening.

All of the workshops offered to conference attendees will be held on the New Mexico State University campus. Additional events also will be held at the NMSU Golf Course Clubhouse, the Hotel Encanto and other locations.

Doña Ana County Assessor Gary Perez, who has handled local logistics for the event, said county elected officials and administrative staff from New Mexico’s 33 counties will converge on Las Cruces for educational and entertainment purposes during the conference.

“This is a great venue for showing off everything our community has to offer,” Perez said. “These community leaders from throughout the state are going to get the red-carpet treatment, and we’re confident they’ll take home their stories of Doña Ana County’s hospitality, thereby generating future tourism from within the state.”

Guest speakers and performers during the conference include motivational speaker Dr. Lowell Catlett, the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department Color Guard, The Silver Bullet Band and Jason Hull, a Doña Ana County Detention Center employee who will sing The Star-Spangled banner during the opening ceremonies. Workshops will focus on issues related to worker’s compensation, county insurance, finance, purchasing, law, county management, personnel and a host of other pertinent areas.
