ACCIDENTAL STOVE FIRE LEAVES FAMILY OF TEN HOMELESS

The Doña Ana County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a mobile-home fire this morning at Evergreen Mobile Home Park that left a family of 10 homeless but uninjured. The park is located at 6345 N. Doña Ana Road, north of Las Cruces.

At home in the single-wide trailer at the time of the fire were a woman and seven of her eight children. The father and one child had left the home earlier in the morning. The woman was able to call 911 at 7:26 a.m. She evacuated her children without any injuries.

Crews from the Doña Ana Volunteer Fire Department arrived at 7:34 a.m., but the home was already fully engulfed in flames. With assistance from the Las Cruces Fire Department, the fire was fully controlled within about 10 minutes. An adjacent mobile home suffered minor exterior heat damage on one side.

Investigators, who have ruled the fire accidental, believe it started at the kitchen stove.

The family is receiving housing and clothing assistance from the Las Cruces Chapter of the American Red Cross. The mobile home and its contents were a total loss.

The American Red Cross is accepting donations of clothing, toys and household items for the family. The children – all boys – are aged 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 12 and 14. Clothing sizes needed are 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10 and 14. The mother wears women’s size 14 and needs maternity clothing. The father wears men’s size 32 clothing (large).
