DOÑA ANA COUNTY ADDS FREE SOFTWARE TO WEBSITE TO ASSIST MORE RESIDENTS

New software has been added to Doña Ana County’s award-winning website, which makes content available to people with learning disabilities and vision problems, as well as those for whom English is a second language, among others.

Browsealoud’s “Site Reader” is a software program from TextHelp Systems Ltd, that converts web content to audio files. Site Reader is free to download and utilize, with links from the Doña Ana County home page and step-by-step instructions for users of PCs and Apple computers.

The link to the new software is located on the left side of the home page, just beneath the link that translates the site’s content from English to Spanish.

In June of 2007, for the second consecutive year, the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties (NACo) named Doña Ana County’s website among the best in the United States for counties with populations under 250,000. The county’s website rated ninth in the category in 2006. In 2007, it moved up to eighth place.

“The new software on the website reflects Doña Ana County’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the standards that earned us these two national awards,” said County Manager Brian D. Haines. “I’m proud of the team of people who keep the content updated and the technology at the cutting edge.”

The county’s original website was completely overhauled in March of 2005 in a joint project by the Doña Ana County Public Information Office and the Doña Ana County Information Technology Department. It is now updated on a near-daily basis.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is a full-service organization that provides legislative, research, technical, and public affairs assistance to county governments. Created in 1935, NACo continues to ensure that the nation’s 3,066 counties are heard and understood in the White House and Congress.
