DOÑA ANA COUNTY AIRPORT AT SANTA TERESA PLANS OPEN HOUSE ON SEPT. 19

An open house will be held Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 4-6:30 p.m. at the Doña Ana County Airport Manager’s Office at Santa Teresa, 8000 Airport Road, to gather public input on the airport master plan and 20-year future development needs at the facility.

This is the second of two public meetings concerning the master plan, which got underway last summer and is nearing completion. The public is invited to comment on the plan’s contents.

Among the major airport improvements proposed are:

* A 1,050-foot runway extension to the east end of Runway 10-28, for which earthwork has been completed.

* A new, proposed crosswind runway, which would provide for safer takeoffs and landings by general aviation aircraft in strong crosswinds. The runway is planned for ultimate use by heavy cargo aircraft at a length of 12,000 feet. Initially, the runway would be less than half that length and it would not be extended until cargo traffic at the airport grows considerably. Land acquisition, primarily a transfer from the Bureau of Land Management, is needed for crosswind runway development.

* Airport entrance and perimeter road improvements are proposed to facilitate future development, provide access to the new crosswind runway, and provide a more attractive gateway to the airport.

* Infrastructure to support hangar development is contemplated, specifically taxi lanes, roads and utilities to facilitate the future development of hangars and other aviation-related facilities. The number of aircraft based at the airport is projected to grow at 3.9 percent annually in conjunction with growth in the populations and economies of southern Dona Ana County and the El Paso metropolitan area.
