COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES HOST OFFICERS’ MEMORIAL

Law enforcement agencies of southern New Mexico will hold a May 14 memorial service in Las Cruces to honor peace officers who have died in the line of duty.

The Southern New Mexico Fallen Peace Officers’ Memorial Association will pay tribute to the 25 officers of Doña Ana, Luna, Sierra and Otero counties who have died while serving their respective communities in the last 124 years. Personal histories and images of each officer will be briefly presented. The event is scheduled as part of National Police Week, May 13-20.

“We’re proud to commemorate the brave officers who gave their lives to protect and serve this area,” said Deputy Sal Betancourt of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department. “We also want to remind those who are in the field to be safe and vigilant in their duties as peace officers.”

The memorial will be held Monday, May 14, at 9 a.m. at the Oñate High School Performing Arts Center, located at 6800 N. Main St. in Las Cruces. The service is hosted by the 24 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies serving southern New Mexico and Doña Ana County. The public is encouraged to attend.
