SPECIAL TRAINING OFFERED FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS, EMTs

The Fairacres Volunteer Fire Department will host a special training opportunity on Feb. 15 for volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians in the community.

Titled, “O Brother, Where Art Thou,” the training exercise will focus on rescue techniques when a firefighter or emergency responder is in trouble at the site of an incident.

Instructor Laura Mae Williams is a highly trained, veteran member of the Fairacres Volunteer Fire Department. In 2006, she was awarded New Mexico’s EMS Instructor of the Year award.

“As firefighters and EMTs, we regularly attend continuing education that prepares us for taking care of our communities,” Williams said, “but rarely have we taken time to practice treating one of our own on emergency scenes.”

Williams said the training will include simulated situations where participants can assess and treat a downed colleague.

Fairacres Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Mims is donating equipment and space for the training seminar, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m., Williams said.
