INMATE DIES AT COUNTY DETENTION CENTER

An inmate in the medical unit of the Doña Ana County Detention Center was taken by ambulance to a Las Cruces hospital Wednesday afternoon, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

David Rudy Ramos, 39, of Alamogordo, had a history of medical problems. He was heard moaning in his one-person cell by a guard. The guard notified the nursing staff, who found Ramos lying in a large pool of blood, breathing and with a pulse, but otherwise non-responsive.

The facility’s doctor ordered an ambulance, and facility staff worked to stabilize Ramos until the ambulance arrived. The inmate died in transport.

Neither foul play nor suicide is suspected in the death. An autopsy is pending. Ramos was being held on shoplifting and evidence-tampering charges, as well as a probation violation.
