PET EXPO SLATED FOR OCT. 28 AT YOUNG PARK IN LAS CRUCES

Doña Ana County residents and their pets are invited to Pet Expo 2006 at Young Park in the City of Las Cruces. The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Doña Ana County Animal Control Supervisor Ellie Choate is among the organizers of the event, along with Gino Jimenez of the City of Las Cruces Animal Control Division.

“This is really a great time for families and their pets,” Choate said. “We have been involved with this for three years, and we are really trying hard to bring in the county residents. Basically, the city and county animal control agencies are hosting the event for all residents and pets of Doña Ana County.”

Choate said the event will include a Halloween costume contest for pets, sponsored by Spay Neuter Action Program (SNAP) of Las Cruces. In addition, Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary will sponsor a silent auction to raise money for spay-and-neuter services across Doña Ana County.

The 2006 Pet Expo will feature appearances by Debby MacDonald of Animal Cops Detroit and Jim Boller, formerly of Animal Cops Houston. The event also will feature remarks by Commission Chairwoman Dolores Saldaña-Caviness and Las Cruces Mayor Bill Mattiace.

In addition, there will be a Code 3 Associates animal rescue vehicle on hand, along with police-dog training demonstrations. Animals will be available for adoption from the Doña Ana County Humane Society, using the Pet’s Barn adoption trailer, and vendors will be set up to sell food and pet supplies.

The event is hosted by Doña Ana County and the City of Las Cruces, with sponsorship support from various local businesses.
