SMOKE DETECTORS TO BE GIVEN AWAY DURING FIRE PREVENTION MONTH

More than 500 smoke detectors will be given away during October as Doña Ana County celebrates Fire Prevention Month, as proclaimed Wednesday, Oct. 11, by the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners.

The Doña Ana County Fire Marshal's Office and Health and Human Services Department have teamed up to make smoke detectors and safety-education programs available to residents in and around the communities of Anthony, Chaparral, Organ, Rincon and Doña Ana.

Research shows that installing smoke detectors on every level of a home cuts in half the chances of anyone dying in the home during a fire. Fires remain a leading cause of unintentional injury and death among children in the United States.

“Preparation and education are key elements in preventing fire tragedies,” said Doña Ana County Fire Marshal Paul Chavez. “Planning and practicing a fire-escape route with your family is a simple step that can save lives. Talking to your children about what to expect in a fire can help them get out alive, because a prepared child is more likely to escape unharmed.”

Doña Ana County Fire Marshal's Office personnel will pay visits this week to Doña Ana, East Picacho and Columbia Elementary schools to discuss fire prevention and fire safety in a number of classrooms.

In addition, education classes and smoke-alarm giveaways will occur at the following times and places:
