HOSPITALIZED INMATE DIES; NO FOUL PLAY SUSPECTED

Doña Ana County Detention Center inmate Daryl Spencer Freeman, 23, died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center after complaining from his medical-unit jail cell of dizziness, pain and shortness of breath. Freeman was being housed in the Medical Unit due to a pre-incarceration knee injury.

After evaluation by medical staff at the jail, Freeman was transported by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center, where he later lost consciousness and died. The cause of death is under investigation, but foul play is not suspected as a contributing factor.

Freeman would have turned 24 on Saturday, Sept. 16. He was a resident of Las Cruces and a native of Fort Hood, Texas.
He was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center by Las Cruces Police on Aug. 22, 2006, on felony charges of residential burglary and breaking and entering, as well as a probation violation.

During a Sept. 11 arraignment, Freeman pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was being held under a $20,000 bond.
