RAILCARS IN DOWNTOWN HATCH ARE A CONCERN

The Doña Ana County Emergency Operations Center is working to determine the contents of several rail cars standing in floodwaters in downtown Hatch.

Federal regulations stipulate that hazardous materials must be carried in vacuum-sealed containers that are resistant to spilling.

Officials are working with Southwestern Railroad to find out the manifests of the cars and to determine how quickly the string of cars can be safely removed from the floodwaters, regardless of their contents.
