SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES PITCH IN TO SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department deputies have a long history of supporting Special Olympics in New Mexico, and they have ramped up their fundraising to support the 2006 games in Albuquerque.

Working in conjunction with other area law-enforcement agencies – including the Doña Ana County Detention Center, Las Cruces Police Department, Sunland Park Police Department, New Mexico State Police, New Mexico State University Police and the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility – deputies will participate in a number of fund-raising activities in advance of the games, which start May 19.

Sgt. Marty Dudley, coordinator for the 2006 fundraising effort, said three events already have been planned, with more in the pipeline.

On Thursday, March 23, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department deputies and Sunland Park Police officers will work for tips from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the State Line Steakhouse in the City of Sunland Park.

On Friday, March 24, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department deputies and Sunland Park Police officers will work for tips from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ventana’s Seafood Buffet at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.

On May 16, officers from all participating agencies will run the Special Olympics torch up the county’s main roads from Doña Ana County’s southern tip in the City of Sunland Park to the northern county line north of the Village of Hatch.

On Friday, May 26, Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department deputies, Doña Ana County Detention Center staff and Las Cruces Police Department officers will work for tips from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Red Lobster Restaurant in the City of Las Cruces. Other agencies may also participate.

In addition, Sgt. Dudley has merchandise for sale on an ongoing basis, all emblazoned with the Special Olympics logo. T-shirts are $15 each, wristbands and blinking lapel pins are $5 each, pens are $3 each and paper torches are $1 each. All proceeds from all events and sales goes to support Doña Ana County Special Olympics athletes as they compete at the state level.
