ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER BOOKED FOR BURGLARY, INDECENT EXPOSURE

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators today arrested Shaun J. Cordero, 26, of La Mesa, N.M., and charged him with a fourth-degree felony count of aggravated indecent exposure and a third-degree felony count of residential burglary.

Cordero is employed as a Doña Ana County animal control officer. He was arrested shortly before noon and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on $15,000 bond.

Sheriff’s investigators allege that on July 4, 2005, Cordero exposed his genitals to a girl under the age of 18. Cordero also is alleged to have broken into a house in La Mesa on Nov. 19, 2005, with the intent to commit a sex crime upon a minor.

Sheriff’s investigators were contacted late last week by the girl’s parents, who said their daughter had implicated Cordero to them during a conversation. The investigation began immediately. Neither alleged crime occurred while Cordero was on duty as an animal control officer. Additional criminal charges are possible pending further investigation.

The Doña Ana County Human Resources Department said Cordero could be subjected to leave without pay pending completion of simultaneous criminal and internal investigations. Cordero has been employed at Doña Ana County since Nov. 29, 2004.

No further information on the case is available at this time.
