LOCAL CONTINGENT HEADS TO SANTA FE FOR COLONIAS DAY 2006

District 1 Commissioner Oscar Vásquez-Butler and the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department have arranged for a full day of activities in Santa Fe on Saturday, Feb. 4, in support of Doña Ana County’s Colonias Initiative.

A caravan of colonias residents and county staff will leave Las Cruces shortly after noon on Feb. 3. Events on Feb. 4 get underway at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast meeting to discuss lobbying strategies. At 8:15 a.m., the group will depart for the State Capital Building, where they will tour the Round House at 9:15 in advance of a 10 a.m. meeting in the New Mexico Senate Chambers. The group will then tour the House Chambers at 11 a.m.

A meeting with Gov. Bill Richardson has been tentatively scheduled between 10 a.m. and noon, which could impact one or both of the tours.

Gov. Richardson appropriated $5 million last year for infrastructure improvements in Doña Ana County’s colonias. He has promised a similar level of support in 2006.
