VETERANS ADVISED OF TAX CHANGES, GULF WAR WALL OF HONOR

PROPERTY-TAX EXEMPTIONS
The Las Cruces Office of the New Mexico Veterans’ Service Office advises veterans that they may qualify for a property-tax deduction.

The newest property-tax exemption for veterans has gone up from $3,500 to $4,000 for tax year 2006. Veterans who already are getting the tax exemption will receive the new discount automatically.

Veterans who have not yet applied for the tax exemption may do so at the N.M. Department of Veteran Services at 430 South Main St., in Las Cruces. To apply, you will need a copy of your discharge papers (DD-214 or equivalent) and proof of residency (New Mexico driver’s license or voter registration).

All honorably discharged New Mexico veterans with at least 180 days of active duty are eligible for the tax exemption. Deadline to file for the property-tax exemption is March 31, 2006. If you have questions regarding eligibility or if you need more information, contact James Turner at (505) 524-6220.
