BUREAU OF ELECTIONS SCHEDULES POLL WORKER ORIENTATION CLASSES

Orientation classes for poll workers have been scheduled in Las Cruces, Anthony and Hatch.

The Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections is gearing up for multiple elections in 2006, including the Primary Election in June and the General Election in November. Poll workers are needed in communities across Doña Ana County. Eligibility to serve is limited to registered voters.

To prepare for the voting season, Doña Ana County Clerk Rita Torres is urging registered voters to sign up to work the polls. Training classes will begin Jan. 23 and continue through Jan. 31.

Three Las Cruces classes will be held at the Doña Ana County Courthouse at 251 W. Amador Ave., in the Doña Ana County Commission Chambers on the second floor. Trainings will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the following dates: Jan. 24, 27 and 31.

Two Anthony classes will be held at the Anthony Community Center at 875 N. Main St. Trainings will be offered at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23 and 25

A training session in Hatch will be held at the Hatch School Band Room at 305 Main St., beginning at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26.

All classes are open to any interested persons. To become a poll worker, a resident must complete one of the two-hour classes. Class sizes are limited, so calling ahead is advised.

Each poll worker and standby poll worker chosen to work on Election Day will receive $100 for attending the training and working on Election Day. Those chosen to serve as presiding judges at the polls will receive a total of $150.

The Doña Ana County Bureau of Elections also is recruiting voting-machine technicians. Applicants should have technical aptitude and experience. Training will be provided.

Temporary office help also is being solicited to assist with data entry, filing and customer-service.
