INCIDENT AT DETENTION CENTER PROMPTS TEMPORARY LOCKDOWN

An early afternoon incident involving two inmates at the Doña Ana County Detention Center prompted a precautionary lockdown of the facility. Rumors of a riot at the facility are inaccurate.

The two inmates were attempting to incite other inmates to violence but were unsuccessful. The other inmates in the area refused to participate. Detention personnel responded to the incident shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the facility’s Delta Pod. During the incident, some windows were broken within the cell complex.

Eight detention officers donned protective gear, entered the cell area and broke up the incident using OC gas. Neither inmate sustained injuries from either their actions or the intervention of staff. No staff members were injured.

The incident was over before outside agencies - including the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department and the Las Cruces Police Department - reached the facility to provide assistance, which is automatically requested any time a disturbance takes place.

Three inmates - the two who provoked the incident and a third who was standing nearby - were taken to the detention center’s medical unit for evaluation and precautionary eye-flushes.

While the investigation continues and clean-up crews repair the damage, the facility will remain under lockdown. Staff anticipates the facility’s operations will return to normal early Sunday, Dec. 18.

Both inmates will face additional criminal charges upon completion of the investigation.
