CHRIS BARELA NAMED DETENTION CENTER DIRECTOR FOR DOÑA ANA COUNTY

Doña Ana County Manager Brian D. Haines has named Christopher P. Barela to the post of Doña Ana County Detention Center administrator. Barela was chosen from a field of 13 applicants.

Barela has been an employee of the detention center since January of 2001. He attained the rank of major, and he helped to oversee support and operation functions for the facility. He has experience in preparing the facility’s annual budget, and he has worked closely with all the facility’s vendors and contractors.

“Few positions in county government carry the range of responsibilities of the detention administrator,” Haines said. “Chris Barela brings five years of institutional knowledge and an unwavering work ethic to the job. His familiarity with the detention center and its staff will help us to achieve a seamless transition for the facility. We did a national search to find the right person for this challenging and important management position. I’m delighted that one of our own employees was able to rise up through the ranks and compete impressively on a national playing field. I’m confident that the detention center staff and population will be well-served as a result.”

As administrator, Barela agreed to convert from a classified position to being a contracted employee. His contract, signed today, runs through May 1, 2007. Barela will be paid $67,500 per year.

Barela holds a bachelor’s degree in public programs from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in business organizational management from the University of Phoenix. He also is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
