DOÑA ANA COUNTY JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER HOSTS HALLOWEEN CONTESTS

The Dona Ana County Juvenile Detention Facility will sponsor Halloween activities and contests for dozens of young people who are locked up in the facility. This is the fourth year that Halloween activities have been incorporated into the juvenile-detention calendar.
For 2005, there will be poster-design and face-painting judging beginning at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 31, 2005. Approximately 40-45 youth are expected to participate.

The juvenile detainees are encouraged to be creative with their poster designs, and the winning groups will receive their choice of pizza or ice cream. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in the face-painting contest. Each of the three prize categories includes commissary money, with which the juveniles can purchase hygiene materials, snacks, writing materials, clothing, etc.

“We do this to help ease some of the tension and frustration that some of these kids go through due to being in jail during the holidays,” said Lt. Vickie Garcia. “ We let them know that even though they are here, they are not forgotten about.”
