COUNTY TREASURER STUDYING STATE INVESTMENTS IN WAKE OF ARRESTS

Doña Ana County Treasurer Jim Schoonover has announced that his office will work with state officials to determine whether this morning’s racketeering arrests of New Mexico state Treasurer Robert Vigil and former State Treasurer Michael Montoya pose any risk to the safety of county funds invested through the State of New Mexico.

“Out of the $1.8 billion in the state fund, about $51.7 million is money that is entrusted by our office to the state investment pool,” Schoonover said. “At this point, I have no reason to worry that our funds are unsafe or compromised, but I will be working closely with state officials to make a final determination. If there is any question as to the integrity of the state investment fund related to today’s events, Doña Ana County will invest its money elsewhere, perhaps as early as next week.”

Schoonover said he is in close contact with other county treasurers throughout the state, and together they are monitoring developments.
