COUNTY OFFICIALS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMUNITY-APPRECIATION EVENT

Doña Ana County’s 10 elected officials, management and staff have been recognized for efforts to assist with relief efforts targeted to victims of Hurricane Katrina and have been invited to a Sept. 17 event at Sun Lanes to thank the community for its response to the disaster.

Sun Lanes owner Phil Kinzer said he was touched by news that two Doña Ana County commissioners donated parts of their 2005 salaries to the relief effort and that the Doña Ana County Employee Activity Committee donated $1,000 to the cause.

Those donations followed a Sept. 9 event co-sponsored by Sun Lanes, Magic 105, and KOBE, who teamed up for a 12-hour live broadcast from the parking lot at Sun Lanes, which resulted in donations of food, water, clothing, toys and cash for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. In all, Kinzer said, the event helped raise nearly $10,000 cash and more than $250,000 worth of food, water, clothing and toys.

In addition to county officials, the Sept. 17 events will feature Las Cruces Mayor Bill Mattiace and Third Judicial District Attorney Susanna Martinez. The public will be offered free bowling and billiards from noon until 3 p.m. All Doña Ana County employees and residents who volunteered and/or donated to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Drive are welcome to the event, which will feature a pot-luck style meal.
