CLERK'S OFFICE TO HOLD VOTER DRIVES, VOTING-MACHINE DEMOS

The Doña Ana County Clerk's office will be conducting voter-registration drives, poll worker-recruitment drives and demonstrations of the office's new touch-screen voting machines throughout the month.

Staff from the clerk's Bureau of Elections will hold the first August expo at the Mesilla Mercado on Sunday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"We're excited to take our registration and educational services into the community, and we are eager to recruit poll workers for our upcoming elections," County Clerk Rita Torres said.

Torres said the public will be given an opportunity at all events to test the county’s new touch-screen voting machines, which are scheduled to be deployed during future elections. The new machines allow voters to view ballot names and initiatives in a variety of languages, including English and Spanish. Visually impaired voters can use the machine’s auditory ballots without the assistance of poll workers.

The Bureau of Elections will host a registration drive at the Valley Drive Wal-Mart on Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The clerk's office also is working with the Associated Students of New Mexico State University to hold an expo on Friday, Aug. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., outside the NMSU Corbett Center Student Union's bookstore.

Other events are in the planning stages and will be announced as the dates, times and locations are finalized.
