COMMISSIONER EVANS APPOINTED TO CHAIR NACo LABOR COMMITTEE

District 4 Commissioner D. Kent Evans has been appointed chairman of the National Association of Counties’ Labor and Employment Steering Committee. NACo President Angelo Kyle announced the appointment on March 30.

The Labor and Employment Steering Committee deals with all matters pertaining to employer-employee relations, including personnel policies and practices, merit systems, equal-employment opportunities, collective bargaining, pensions, fringe benefits, occupational safety, workers’ compensation and employment programs for counties across the United States.

The committee also reviews matters related to welfare reform, youth employment, public-service employment, vocational education, migrant and Native American programs, rural manpower challenges, employment security and unemployment insurance.

“Commissioner Evans will be a strong advocate for county issues on Capitol Hill,” said NACo Executive Director Larry Naake.

Because he chairs a national committee, all of Evans’ travel costs to NACo events will be paid either by the New Mexico Association of Counties or the National Association of Counties. As a result, Doña Ana County will not bear any costs related to Commissioner Evans’ travel to Hawaii later this year for the annual convention of the National Association of Counties.

“I’m honored to have been chosen to chair this important committee at the national level,” Evans said. “I pledge to work hard to reach the committee’s goals and to continue to represent Doña Ana County and New Mexico at the national level.”
