COMMISSION CHAIRMAN McCAMLEY GROWS HIS LOCKS WITH LOVE

District 5 Commissioner William J. 'Bill' McCamley, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, has a plan to help out children. He’s going to grow his hair long.

McCamley said he plans to grow his hair out until it’s long enough to make a donation to ‘Locks of Love,’ a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children, 18 and under, who suffer from medical hair loss. Locks of Love only accepts donations of ponytails 10 inches and longer.

The custom-fitted hair prosthetics are provided free of charge or on a sliding scale to children whose families meet the Locks of Love guidelines. Each case is reviewed on an individual basis.

Donors provide the hair, volunteers staff the office, and the manufacturer hand-assembles each piece, which requires four to six months.

The organization, which began in 1997, has helped more than 1,400 children since its first year of operation. Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive from around the country each year.
