150 DEL CERRO CHILDREN TO RECEIVE HOLIDAY TOYS SATURDAY

Approximately 150 children in Del Cerro will be recipients of toys donated by Doña Ana County employees. The distributions of gifts will take place Saturday, Dec. 4 from Noon to 2 p.m. at the Del Cerro Community Resource Center at 180 La Fe Ave.

The Del Cerro event is the first of several toy-distribution events planned between now and Dec. 18.
County employees and local businesses have purchased and/or donated more than 350 toys valued at over $6,000 for distribution to children in eight of the county’s most economically depressed communities.

District 1 Commissioner Oscar Vásquez Butler has also contributed heavily to the effort and has arranged donations of large gifts - such as bicycles - that will be raffled during the distribution events, so that some lucky children will go home with an even brighter holiday glow.

Coordinated by the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department, the holiday initiative identified children from several colonias. The children’s names, ages and interests were printed on yellow stars, which employees then ‘adopted.’ The initiative involved more than 300 county employees, each of whom sponsored one or more children and purchased a new gift for each worth up to $20.

Upcoming distribution events include: Dec. 8, Radium Springs Community Center, 6-7:30 p.m.; Dec. 9, Hatch Community Resource Center, 4-6 p.m.; Dec. 10, Rincon Community Center, 6-7 p.m.; Dec. 11, Chaparral Community Resource Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Dec. 15, Anthony Community Resource Center, 3-5 p.m.; Dec. 18, Organ Community Resource Center, Noon-2 p.m.
