COUNTY EMPLOYEES DONATE $5,040 IN NEW TOYS TO NEEDY CHILDREN

Doña Ana County employees have purchased more than 336 toys valued at over $5,040 for distribution to children in eight of the county’s most economically depressed communities.

Coordinated by the Doña Ana County Health and Human Services Department, the holiday initiative identified children from several colonias. The children’s names, ages and interests were printed on yellow stars, which employees then ‘adopted.’ The initiative involved 311 county employees, each of whom sponsored one or more children and purchased a new gift for each worth up to $20.

County Manager Brian D. Haines said he was “blown away” when he attended a luncheon Friday November 18, 2004 sponsored by Health and Human Services. He said an area about half the size of a gymnasium was piled high with toys that will be distributed during December to the communities identified for participation.

“I knew this was a great group of people working here,” Haines said, “but I was stunned by the participation levels in this program. This was the first year we’ve ever tried anything like this, and it was just phenomenal. My hat’s off to the Health and Human Services staff for putting this together and to every single DAC employee who participated. A lot of kids are going to have great holidays because of the generosity of our county workers.”

The toys will be distributed Dec. 4-18 at the following times and locations: Dec. 4, Del Cerro Community Center, Noon-2 p.m.; Dec. 8, Radium Springs Community Center, 6-7:30 p.m.; Dec. 9, Hatch Community Resource Center, 4-6 p.m.; Dec. 10, Rincon Community Center, 6-7 p.m.; Dec. 11, Chaparral Community Resource Center, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Dec. 15, Anthony Community Resource Center, 3-5 p.m.; Dec. 18, Organ Community Resource Center, Noon-2 p.m.
