BREACH NOW ‘UNLIKELY’ AS RESERVOIR EAST OF FARM/RANCH MUSEUM RUNS OVER

Water continues to flow over a makeshift dam east of the Bruce King Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, but engineers on the scene from the Doña Ana County Flood Commission report that the danger of a sudden breach is “unlikely.”

Cuts have been made in the dam to help control the flow of water. Water is flowing naturally to low areas south and west of the dam. Residential flooding is no longer considered likely.

County Flood Director Paul Dugie reported from the field at about 8 p.m. that the water was draining efficiently, and that the area to which it is flowing can easily accommodate several times the volume of water behind the makeshift dam.

Dripping Springs Road remains closed to all through traffic. Water will continue to cross the road heavily as it makes its way toward the Tortugas I Dam east of the NMSU Golf Course, and Sheriff Juan Hernandez reports that Dripping Springs Road is heavily undercut and dangerous near the A-Mountain curve headed west from Talavera Estates.

Baylor Canyon Road is open to high-clearance and four-wheel-drive vehicles, but drivers are urged to exercise caution along the roadway. At this time, Baylor Canyon Road is the only access and egress to residents of the Talavera area.

Heavy rains were reported earlier this evening in the Radium Springs and Vado areas. Crews responding report that problem areas have been addressed and no serious damage is apparent at this time. County crews and law enforcement will continue to respond to problem areas as they are identified, and more evaluation and planning will occur in the morning, when the terrain is visible.

The National Weather Service reports that the threat of severe weather is over for tonight. The Doña Ana County Emergency Operations Center will deactivate at 9 p.m.
