SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT TICKETS MORE THAN 200 DURING CAMPAIGN

The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department's participation in the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign yielded many more than 200 seatbelt-related citations.

Deputies issued 226 citations to motorists and passengers for not wearing seat belts, and another 32 citations were written for child-safety infractions. Ten fugitives also were arrested during the blitz period.

The two-week campaign, from May 24 to June 6, incorporated law enforcement agencies in hundreds of communities across the country enforcing zero tolerance of safety-belt violations, with a special emphasis on teens and young adults. These efforts, coupled with paid advertising and the support of governmental agencies, traffic-safety organizations, local advocates and others, were aimed at dramatically increasing safety-belt use.

Other Sheriff's Department citations or arrests during Click It or Ticket-related stops included: 86 speeding citations; 62 citations for driving with no insurance; 27 citations for failure to stop at stop signs;19 citations for operating a motor vehicle with no driver's license;16 arrests for driving while license suspended or revoked; 13 citations for no vehicle registration; six citations for driving with a suspended license; two arrests for possession of narcotics; and one open-container violation (alcohol).
