TOWNSEND TO RECEIVE FIRE PROTECTION EDUCATION AWARD

Dr. John S. Townsend, director of the Doña Ana County Office of Emergency Management will receive the 2004 Connie Award for his work in industrial fire protection and education. The award will be presented during the 19th annual Industrial Fire World Conference & Exposition, April 12-15, in Houston.

The Connie Award is given annually in recognition of outstanding service in expanding knowledge regarding industrial fire protection. The award is presented by Joe Gross, owner of The Roberts Company in
Framingham, MA, in honor of his late wife and business partner.

Beginning as a fire marshal in Hill County, Texas, Townsend rose through the ranks of fire protection to become a full training specialist under the occupational health and safety division of the Texas Engineering Extension Service at Texas A&M University. He also served as assistant director of the Waste Management

Education Research Consortium at New Mexico State University and director of the environmental science program at New Mexico State University at Carlsbad.

Aside from his work in New Mexico, Townsend is also a member of the adjunct faculty at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD. In 1995, he served on a National Fire Academy panel that visited South Africa to advise on the mitigation of hazardous materials.

The Industrial Fire World conference is the only conference of its type in the world aimed at educating industrial emergency responders. Industrial Fire World also publishes the only magazine in North America for industrial emergency responders.
