SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT TO GIVE AWAY GUN LOCKS

The Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department will give away 1,000 free firearm safety kits, each of which will include a gun lock, starting next Monday.

Sheriff Juan Hernandez has received the firearm safety kits from Project ChildSafe, a program funded by a U.S. Justice Department grant and the firearm industry. The cable-style gun locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. Each kit also includes a safety curriculum.

"I hope residents will take advantage of the free information and gun lock," Hernandez said. "All gun owners should understand their responsibility in preventing children or unauthorized persons from accessing firearms in their homes."

Project ChildSafe, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, will distribute millions of the firearm safety kits to all 50 states and the five U.S. territories over the next year.
