COUNTY ASSESSOR EXTENDS EXEMPTION, PROTEST DEADLINES

Doña Ana County Assessor Gary Perez has announced a one-week extension of the deadline to protest property values or apply for various property-tax exemptions allowed under the law.

Perez said the new deadline is April 5, 2004. He said the extension was put in place to compensate for some late mailings of property valuation notices by a printing contractor.

"When I learned that not all the notices were mailed on March 1 as my office had anticipated, I instructed staff to accept valuation protests and exemption applications through April 5," Perez said. "We want to make sure that all property owners get the full 30 days to which they're entitled. The printing contractor has assured me that all mailings went out by March 5."

Perez said New Mexico law stipulates that the deadline for protesting valuations and claiming exemptions is 30 days after the date of mailing. The deadline is crucial, especially for those claiming veterans' exemptions, since they must first submit an application to Santa Fe.
