COMMISSION RETURNS RITA TORRES TO COUNTY CLERK'S OFFICE

Selecting from a pool of 11 applicants, the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners Tuesday opted for a record of proven performance and selected Rita Torres to fill out the remainder of the term of former County Clerk Ruben Ceballos.

Torres was sworn in at a mid-morning ceremony during the Commission meeting. Doña Ana County Probate Judge Olivia Nevarez Garcia presided over the swearing-in ceremony. Torres took over as County Clerk effective immediately.

Torres, who will seek formal election to the post as a Democrat in the June Primary Election, will serve as the appointed County Clerk through Dec. 31, 2004. She previously held the position of County Clerk as an elected official from 1992 to 2000.

Ceballos resigned as County Clerk following his conviction on five felony counts related to his mismanagement of the June 2002 Primary Elections. As a convicted felon, he is ineligible to hold elective office.
