COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL TO ISSUE BURN PERMITS

Effective Jan. 1, 2004, the New Mexico Environmental Department has relinquished the responsibility of issuing burn permits to the Doña Ana County Fire Marshal’s Office.

The 1997 Uniform Fire Code requires permits for all open burning. Permits will only be issued to residents who comply with the Fire Code.

Among the requirements for permitted open burning are the following: 1) The local fire department must be notified prior to any burning; 2) No paper products can be burned; 3) Weather conditions must be conducive to safe burning, and all burning must take place during daytime hours at least three hours after sunrise and one hour before sunset; 4) The wind must carry smoke away from roadways and residential areas; 5) No burning can take place within 50 feet of any structure of flammable material; 6) A garden hose connected to a water supply must be readily available during the burning process; and 7) The burning process must be continually monitored by the permit holder.

The Fire Marshal’s Office will require that open burning be immediately discontinued if smoke emissions are offensive to occupants of surrounding properties or if the open burning is determined to constitute a hazardous condition.
