EIGHT ILLEGALS DISCOVERED AT CHECKPOINT

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department discovered and detained eight illegal aliens during a DWI checkpoint Thursday night, before handing them over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

The vehicle in which the detainees traveled was seized.
Thursday’s checkpoint screened 560 vehicles, almost three times the average volume of previous checkpoints. Deputies tested 11 people for possible alcohol impairment, but no DWI arrests were made.

Deputies issued 18 citations to drivers with no proof of insurance, five citations for no registration and four citations for no driver’s license. Another vehicle was seized for displaying a fictitious license plate. The driver of that vehicle was issued a citation for improper use of evidence of registration.

Deputies working overtime to conduct the checkpoint were compensated with Operation DWI grant funds.
