AREA OFFICERS PARTICIPATE IN CRISIS-INTERVENTION TRAINING

Thirty Doña Ana County law enforcement personnel are participating in three days of intensive crisis-intervention training.
“Frontline Crisis Intervention: Strategies for Police Officers” is being held through July 24 at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Las Cruces. The training is sponsored by the Forensic Intervention Consortium of Doña Ana County. Participants include representatives from the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department, Las Cruces Police Department, Hatch Police Department, New Mexico State Police and the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

Crisis intervention training is provided by Frontline Crisis Intervention (FCI), an Albuquerque company, that provides law enforcement officers with proven strategies for effective and safe management of individuals with mental illness or who are otherwise in crisis.

Each course participant is instructed on the dynamics of emotional crisis, legal issues, application of the Mental Health Code, abnormal behavior, tactical communications, suicide and suicide by cop, personality disorders, psychosis and psychopharmacology. Other areas of training include post-traumatic stress disorder, developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injury, problems of older persons, drug recognition and intervention strategies, officer awareness and tactical considerations. Finally, officers demonstrate de-escalation and intervention strategies by interacting with professional role players provided by FCI.

Instructors include veteran police officers, a mental health professional, a police psychologist and a drug-recognition expert. According to retired Albuquerque Police Department Sgt. Gene Pettit, managing partner of FCI, “The goal of this training is to provide front-line professionals with tools to enhance personal safety and the safety of individuals who are in emotional crisis and may be a danger to themselves or to others.”
