SINKHOLE PROMPTS COUNTY TO CLOSE A SECTION OF SNOW ROAD, DETOUR TRAFFIC

A section of Snow Road between Onnes Acres Road and Richardson Road has been closed indefinitely by Doña Ana County due to unsafe driving conditions associated with sinking pavement.

The paved, two-lane thoroughfare is a county-maintained road that carries a reasonably large amount of daily traffic. The closure follows several weeks of close monitoring by the county after the section of road in question began to show recent signs of stress and sinking.

Doña Ana County is working with Elephant Butte Irrigation District and the City of Las Cruces to address the situation. Some of EBID’s irrigators in the area may be affected, and a city-run gas line that runs through the affected area will be capped off until the road can be restored to safe operating condition.

Detours have been posted to move traffic around the affected area in the most efficient possible manner. Central dispatch and area school systems have been notified to steer traffic away from the area and avoid delays.

The cause of the roadway’s sinking is being investigated. A change in the soil condition of the area is one possibility under review. After a cause is determined, the county will make plans to restore the road and will seek to share costs with any responsible parties and/or easement owners.
